Spellings

In year one we have to focus on our phonics, hence our daily sessions, to help our children to read.  In reality there are many words which do not follow our phonetic rules and we call these 'common exception words' or 'tricky' words.  These also have to be learnt in addition to learning our phonics. 

 

Below there are various lists which will help you to know the words that we would expect the children to be writing independently by the end of year one.  I do not suggest you learn too many at a time but maybe choose 4 or 5 words to learn, place them on stickers, write them in chalk, use them for handwriting, paint them etc so that the children can firstly read them by sight and then remember how to spell them.
